TERRORISM STUDENTS NETWORK

SUMMARY AND NEED

For decades, college and graduate students have developed an interest in terrorism, taken academic courses, written papers, theses and dissertations, and traveled to Washington, DC, seeking internships in the fields of terrorism studies and counterterrorism policy.

Additionally, thousands of first-responders and safety & security professionals have conceived, developed, implemented and improved couterterrorism training exercises, seminars, and conferences.

Yet, despite the need, no effort has been initiated to either assess the current state of the terrorism studies and training across the country or coordinate and channel this vast resource of intelligent and motivated counterterrorism pre-professionals and professionals.

SCOPE AND PURPOSE

The proposed non-profit Terrorism Students Network will initially serve as an educational web-based clearinghouse and database for the next generation of terrorism analysts and counterterrorism professionals.

  • Phase 1: TSN will focus on building a Virtual Network of colleges, universities, and professional organizations collecting information on courses, instructors, reading materials, bibliographies.
  • Phase 2: A Virtual Internship program will be launched by recruiting matriculated students nation-wide to collect, analyze, and submit data, papers, and articles for databases and junior professional publications for academic credit and stipends.
  • Phase 3: TSN Outreach will build links with established academic terrorism study programs and launch new initiatives with interested regional universities.
  • Phase 4: Having identified the network, recruited the manpower, and secured links with cooperating institutions, TSN will be poised to launch a variety of projects including original research and publications.

ORIGINAL RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS

  • Database Development
  • Conferences, Seminars, Training, Academic Courses
  • Actual Internships at participating schools, think tanks and govt offices
  • Professional Development Network
  • Mentoring

STRUCTURES AND LINKAGES

The Terrorism Students Network, located near Washington, DC, will be led by a small executive committee and its advisory board. The TSN website will be developed and launched in cooperation with the premier web-based Terrorism Research Center. TSN will forge links with universities near recent terrorist attacks (i.e., New York City, Washington, DC, Pennsylvania, Boston, and Oklahoma) and channel local heightened student interest to build electronic archives and databases as well as to host seminars and conferences. Contacts with think tanks, NGOs, professional organizations, and government offices in the greater Washington, DC, area will be secured for student internships.

CONCLUSION

The Terrorism Students Network is designed to be a low-cost, low-overhead operation, maximizing untapped manpower and student interest to build a fraternity and expand the knowledge base of young terrorism analysts and counterterrorism professionals worldwide.
