Founded in 2002, TSG is built upon professional investigative and analytic counterterrorism experience since 1988. TSG members hold advanced degrees in policy, strategy, security, and law and draw expertise from the research community, law enforcement, non-profit organizations, the military, the private sector, and government service.

TSG also recruits and manages the Terrorism Studies Network (TSN), a global association of students, analysts, scholars, and professionals writing, speaking, and consulting on all aspects of modern political violence.

From 2003-2007, TSG supported the Terrorism Research Center, Inc. (TRC) of northern Virginia. During that period, TSG leadership expanded its scope of expertise by devoting significant time and energy to the field of homeland security. TSG leadership was engaged in support of the first responder community via the Responder Knoweldge Base (RKB), served on a team providing continuity of operations (COOP) and continuity of governance (COG) technical assistance to state and local governments, and contributed analyses on homeland security, Africa, and Asia. Additionally, TSG members managed DARPA and DTRA funded terrorism research projects. In 2008 the Terrorism Studies Group reestablished it's autonomy and independence by severing ties with TRC.

By 2009, TSG leadership continues to widen the scope of its subject matter expertise and the breadth of its service delivery reach. Since 2008 TSG has supported significant counterterrorism efforts in the United States, Poland, and for the European Commission in Brussels. TSG President James Kirkhope founded Kirkhope Consulting International leading and supporting public and private efforts on homeland, national, and international security. Additionally, Kirkhope was appointed Executive Director of the Council for Emerging National Security Affairs (CENSA) which published a provactive new study entitled Countering Insurgency and Promoting Democracy in December 2007. Kirkhope continues serving on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Business Continuity & Emergency Planning published by Henry Stewart Publications in London. As before, TSG is expanding membership and serving as a terrorism research resource to the public and media by offering training, speaking at conferences and workshops, providing interviews, and delivering a wide range of counterterrorism consulting services.
